Get a lawyer to work your case as a nonmoving violation – most states do not deduct points for them but it may be costly on your end to do so.

Many states have a process where you can get a suspended sentence for tickets if you otherwise have a clear driving record. For example many years ago (in Newport News coincidently) I got a ticket for running a stop sign. I appeared in court and gave my side of the story. The judge suspended the fine (and therefore points) for 6 months. After 65 months with out a ticket, the ticket disappeared from my record.

If you hire a lawyer they can go to court for you and probably get the ticket dropped. Or if you don’t want to take that route, mail the fine in and go to traffic classes. They take 2 points off. Your insurance company or the DMV can probably tell you where to find them.

I used to live in VA. You can go to driving school and erase the points, but if your case doesn’t get dropped you will get points. If you’re under 20 driving school is mandatory. I got enough points for one day in driving school to cover me if it happens again. It’s a horrible way to spend a Saturday, but it’s worth it.

plead not guilty in order for this to work it helps to have a valid case but if you take it to trial and the policeman or hwy patrolman (ticket writer) does not show up you may get it thrown out of cort thus no points no fine.

Are you sure that she has to appear in court? Some states allow you to request a trial by mail. I once did this (in CA) and it worked beautifully for the following reasons:

1) It takes a long time for the gov’t to move on anything!

2) Without seeing your face, so much time will elapse that the police officer won’t remember who you are, and thus he won’t be able to recollect the case.

3) In CA, while officers do get paid to appear in court, they don’t get paid to do the paperwork required for a trial by mail.

Because of the above, many officers will just ignore presenting their case in time. As such, the case will be dropped (as was my case.)

Good luck!

Just pay the full price of the ticket. Getting a lawyer involved my show that you may be a little hostile towards the officer. Just plead guilty and ask the judge to let you keep your points. This will not prevent your insurance from going up.

Some judges will let first time offenders pay a higher fine instead of points. This is a huge favor for younger drivers :)

Just go to court. If nobody shows up representing the police department (this happens a lot) your case will be dismissed and you will not have to pay and will not get any points.
