Radar Detector And Speeding Opinion ?

If you are a police officer and you catch someone speeding would you give more of a break to someone who was not using a radar detector vs one that was if both were going the same amount of speed over say 75MPH in a 70MPH. If so why?

I am a police officer and would give both a ticket based on the attitude of the driver. Alot of people will talk themselves into a ticket. Sometime you get pulled over just to advise you of your illegal actions and jump of with an attitude. This will 100% result in a ticket and sometimes more than one.
Best advice is to be polite and honest. Honesty goes a long way with the police.
I would also take the radar detector away.

If you have a radar detector and get pulled over for speeding, then it probably didn’t work. I personally frown on the use of radar detectors because it normally makes people think they can speed until it begins to ring. The answer to your question is that most officers already have in their mind when they get out of the vehicle if they are going to write a citation or not. Radar or not.

I’m with DanH the attitude of the driver is what determines whether or not I issued a ticket, discount ticket or a warning. My experience was that drivers with a radar detector were usually more cooperative during the stop and better drivers over all, even when speeding.

    X3 for DanH.
I’ve let people go for 11 over, and written another guy for 8 over. It all depends on the driver. Don’t give me some bull about “I really have to pee”
Different situations call for different actions on my part.
