I am 17 and got a speeding ticket for going 56 in a 35 mph zone. I have to go to court and have my lawyer going with me. What will he be there for? Will he be speaking for me?

I was pulled over by the police yesterday while driving my car, it was the first time I ever have been in trouble with the law and I have no prior criminal record at all. He gave me a ticket for going 50 mph in a 25 mph residential zone, and I also failed a breathalizer test, but the officer gave me a profane swearing or intoxication in public charge (DIP), he didn’t charge me with a DUI (he gave me a break and just gave me a DIP charge). He also said that he wasn’t going to charge me with reckless driving although he should have. I spent the night in jail and was given a paper with a court date in one month. My questions are:

1: Is the speeding ticket prepayable? It is for going 50/25 mph zone and the reckless driving law is 20 mph over the speed limit. If I prepay this, will they not charge me with reckless driving? The officer said he would not charge me with reckless driving but on the ticket it sais 50 in a 25 zone…

2: Is the drunk in public charge prepayable? It does not say anywhere on the form that I can prepay it, but when I got released from jail the guy told me I could prepay it at the clerks office to avoid court. Also I am really worried because if I have to go to court, won’t the judge see that I should have recieved a DUI instead of a DIP? What will happen concerning that? I was driving and failed a breath test, but I got a DIP… is it possible for the court to change it to a DUI or will the officers charge (DIP) stand?

Thanks so much for your answer, but the thing is that on my citation it does not say anything about a fine, and it doesn’t have an amount to pay or anything, it just sais to appear in court on the date. The cop also told me it was a fine penalty also, but on the citation it doesn’t say how much it is or anything about a fine, i’m so confused.

I live in Virginia. I was on my way to my new job on a 25 m/hr road. Traffic is heavy on this road though and no one goes 25 everyone goes 35 at least or you get honked at and mean looks when people pass you. I am used to going straight down this road for a few miles because that is where my gym is located. I was in the left lane but then realized I needed to make a right up ahead to get to my new job. I wasn’t used to making this turn normally. I put on my blinker and tried to get over but the car next to me was being a jerk and wouldn’t speed up or slow down to let me over, I would have gone behind him but there was a car behind him so I sped up, got infront of him and then slowed back down to around 32 m/hr. That’s when I heard the siren and saw the lights come on and the cop get behind me. He didn’t even ask me why i was speeding or if it was my first offense and just asked for my license and came back with the 140 dollar ticket. I am nervous and don’t know what to do. I got into a very minor accident in December and got my first ticket ever for following too closely. I just paid that one and I’m sure my insurance went up a little. This is my second ticket but my first speeding ticket and since it is so soon after the accident I am nervous my insurance will shoot up. I am a 22 yr old female. My court date is on march 22nd and I am debating on whether to just pay the ticket, take a driving class online or go to court. I havn’t told my dad yet since I am on his insurance still. I am not worried about paying fines my number one concern is how I can avoid my insurance going up. Should I pay it and take the driving class? Should I go to court and see if the cop shows up? What would I do if he shows up? I have never gone to court before so I have no idea what to do here. Any help is appreciated thanks!
Okay so I’ve decided to pay the ticket and take the driving class. Is there anything I can send to the court or my insurance company that could help prevent getting points added or my insurance going up? I read this somewhere but am not sure.

I just got a ticket and they are letting me avoid going to court by taking a defensive driving course. Unfortunately I don’t remember if its been a year since I last took a course. If I request a copy of my driving record will it tell me if I am eligible or not?

I had an incident today where I was going through a school zone, and there was this van hauling *** in front of me.

There was one of those speed checkers that show you how fast they were going. They were quite a few feet in front of me, and it read 38. I checked my speedometer to see I was going 30. And I kept it there. (Speed Limit is 30)

The van slowed down and lined up with me when we got to the speed checker thing, then slowed down and got way way behind me.

Down the road is a cop waiting. He could not see what happened at the laser. I was going the speed limit the entire time but was pulled over and got the ticket.

Now, how the hell does this work? The laser didn’t capture my license plate and beam it over to the cop did it? I’ve been caught on a laser before and I know the laser atleast just sends the speed information to the officer, if there are 2 cars there isn’t a fool proof way to tell which car was speeding unless there was visual confirmation right?

The van was ahead of me the entire time until right up at the laser. He began to slow down and then the laser caught my speed, which was the speed limit the entire time. I want to make sure I can contest this with the maximum amount of probability there was no way to link my car to the radar when it captured the 38 MPH speed. Because I kept an eye on my speedometer the entire time when I saw that radar and it did NOT get that high.

So, please no stupid hateful answers. I’m getting an $89 paycheck this week, have presents to buy still, bills to pay, and I just want some answers. I’m basically asking, does the radar detect speed only OR is it able to capture information. I don’t know HOW it could capture my information at the 38 MPH speed when the van was blocking it from view of my car.
Hiding behind a tree is very unlikely, as the only trees lining that road were baby trees :/ But I see how that could be a possibility.
Oh yeah, my car was just recalibrated last week. So that shouldn’t be an issue. When the van no longer was blocking the laser, it did register my speed as what it said on the speedometer.
Like I said above, the van was quite a bit in front of me when the laser thing read 38. The little laser box was blocked from my view, I could only see the sign. So it was in the van’s level when the reading was taken.

And also as I said above, after we got past the laser, the van dropped its speed, got behind me, and put a lot of distance there. So if the van tripped some sort of alert there was a speeding car down the road, he would come out behind me.

Also the speed limit dropped from 40 to 30 at the line right behind the laser sign. It’s like a warning you need to start dropping your speed and be at 30 when you hit that speed change line.

Okay today i got my first speeding ticket for 79 in a 55
No misdemeanor or anything just a ticket.
I want to avoid as much damage to my insurance rates as possible and know i will not be able to get out of this one. What is my best bet to do? Go to court or just pay my fine? Thank you.

I am from California and I was visiting Portland, OR. I got a speeding ticket. The ticket says that I was going at 70 in a 55 mile zone.
